  • Marcus Rashford Book Club

    Thu 22 Jul 2021

We are delighted to be part of the Marcus Rashford Book Club at Blessed Sacrament School, as promoted by Magic Breakfast.

The Marcus Rashford Book Club is a reader-recommends programme created by England International footballer and child food poverty campaigner Marcus Rashford MBE and Macmillan Children’s Books, to encourage and nurture a love of reading in children.

Magic Breakfast offers healthy breakfasts to around 170,000 children each school day, ensuring pupils in disadvantaged areas of the UK start their day with the energy and nutrition they need to make the most of their morning lessons. The joint mission of MCB, Magic Breakfast and Marcus Rashford is to work closely with schools to get books into the hands of children from disadvantaged backgrounds to encourage reading for pleasure amongst children who don’t have access to books at home. A survey by the National Literacy Trust in 2019 showed that 383,775 children do not own a single book.

The Book Club launched in June 2021 with its first title, A Dinosaur Ate My Sister by Pooja Puri, illustrated by Allen Fatimaharan - a laugh-out-loud, fully-illustrated time travel adventure. A Dinosaur Ate My Sister is the first middle grade title from author Pooja Puri (The Jungle, Ink Road) and was acquired by Simran Sandhu and Rachel Petty as part of three book world rights deal from Lauren Gardner at Bell Lomax Moreton. We have received this first title, and pupils in Years 3 and 4 each received their own copy.

A new title in the Marcus Rashford Book Club will launch in the autumn as part of an arrangement that will see two books a year getting into the hands of children who need them most.

Marcus Rashford MBE says, ‘For too long, the joy of reading has been restricted by whether or not a family has the contingency budget to purchase books. The children who often miss out are those on Free School Meals and users of Breakfast Clubs, who more than likely need fiction, and non-fiction, to escape reality from time to time. We haven't been affording these children the option of reading for fun but that changes today.

Everyone is aware of my experiences with Breakfast Club - it brightened up the start of my day, it stabilised the school day for me, allowed me to engage in reading and allowed me to form life-long friendships. I'm really happy to be partnering with Magic Breakfast to get our books in the hands of children that need them most.

I'm proud to have Pooja join us too. She writes in a way that is engaging, escapist and authentic. Pooja is super talented and I'm a big fan, and I'm sure that the recipients of her book A Dinosaur Ate My Sister will soon be fans of hers too.’

  • Mayor of Islington Visit

    Thu 22 Jul 2021

We were honoured to receive a special visit from the Mayor of Islington today. Mr Mayor spoke to the children about the Summer Reading challenge being led by all Islington libraries this summer. This is an initiative to get families reading new and interesting titles in an effort to promote reading for pleasure. The Mayor answered interesting questions about his own reading preferences and experiences and his journey to becoming Mayor. He even told us about his mayoral regalia and how his chains and badge of office are made of real gold!
    An exciting day!

  • One Plastic Bag

    Tue 20 Jul 2021

Pupils in every class in the school enjoyed reading the beautiful book 'One Plastic Bag' which, set in a rural village in the Gambia, illustrates the importance of ecological awareness and the urgent need for recycling. Pupils demonstrated fantastic writing in various genres in response to the story, and the art work produced was outstanding. The whole school approach enabled the pupils to work collaboratively and to collectively think about our future approaches to environmental issues and a greener approach for our school through our school Eco-leaders.

If you would like to read this book, please see the link below:

  • Gianni Frankis' visit to Blessed Sacrament School - Olympic Champion Hurdler

    Thu 01 Jul 2021

The children were delighted to meet Gianni Frankis - Olympic Champion hurdler, when he came to visit our school on Tuesday 22nd June.

The day started with Gianni putting the children through their sporting paces - delivering fast paced, high intensity workouts to each class in turn, for which the children were sponsored. He then demonstrated some of his own sporting skills, and finished the day giving the children an inspirational talk about his personal journey to professional athletics, and reminding them of his inspirational words of success - 'Never Give Up' and 'Keep Trying'. The children even got the chance to see him in action, representing Great Britain at the 2009 World Championships.

His personal bests are 13.54 seconds in the 110 metres hurdles (+2.0 m/s, Newham 2013) and 7.67 seconds in the 60 metres hurdles (Vienna 2013).
