  • Safer Internet Day 2023

    Wed 08 Feb 2023

2023 Theme ‘Want to talk about it? Making space for conversations about life online’

We celebrated Safer Internet Day this year with a whole school assembly, led by Pip Bhol, who talked about how we can keep ourselves safe online, and how to make the most of using the internet positively and safely. We also invited parents in for a talk with Katy Potts, Islington E-safety lead, on the dangers of the internet and prolonged unsupervised use.

Parents were then invited to our 'Bring a Parent to...' e-safety workshops in class.

Please see below for useful information:

Online Safety Alert in Early Years  Early Years Practitioners have been raising concerns for many years re the screentime habits of 0-5 inc. YouTube and TikTok  is the daily diet for many early years children.
Managing screentime on these platforms is challenging because of the design features and extreme & dangerous content is easily accessed, with violent and scary video content masked by Early Years friendly titles such Huggy Wuggy or 'Rainbow Friends'  And these platforms are often watched on small devices or family phones, overtime resulting in poor posture and motor skills, with lifelong habits are formed at such a critical time for physical, social, emotional and communication and language development.
This Safer Internet Week support families and children on the Online safety agenda and promotion of “good tech” such as Busythings and CbbC.

Digital Diet, “Not No tech but good tech” - platforms like TikTok + YouTube really are the Wild West or Junk Food!
Extreme & dangerous content is easily accessed and sadly Youtube and TikTok is the daily diet for many children.
Children don’t always understand meanings of words or impact of viewing.  Until the Online Harms bill is passed, parents need to stay very involved and check your child’s devices every day.

  • Floating Garden

    Fri 27 Jan 2023

Pupils in Years 3-6 took part in the final session of the Floating Garden project on Thursday 26th January.

They listened to two fascinating stories about travelling across water.
The first story told of the journey through the ages of ice, algae and bio plastics. We listened to a tale from 1850 Victorian times when there was no electricity. People made ice by getting it transported from places like Norway. An Italian man called Carlo Gati wanted to make ice cream, and used to import ice from Norway to Lime house via Regents Canal. He then began to use a giant ice well that is still located at London Canal Museum.
The second story looked at the genius ways nature works.

This water story tells of how the Sahara and Amazon have been tightly linked for over 7000 years. The Sahara which was the land of huge lakes and home to algae diatoms which form the base of the food chain, left depressions by dead algae on the lake bed floor. Dust blowing across the Atlantic to the Amazon with rising vapours of water including all the algae minerals in the dust, has become a natural fertiliser for the Amazon. The  dust that travels thousands of miles from the Sahara to this day, continues to feed the Amazonian rainforest.

The children's activity was to make bio plastic sun catchers. Bio plastics are safe for the environment and able to be broken down as they are made from plants.  The bio plastics the children made were from agar agar, a powder seaweed derivative.
The solution was made from agar powder mixed in glycerin and water and then poured into a dish decorated with flower petals and leaves.

The session ended with a free fall writing piece with the sentence starter 'Dear Algae, today you taught me.....'
Thank you to Laura from the Global Generation for such a wonderful experience.

  • St Martin Road Safety Workshop

    Fri 27 Jan 2023

Pupils in St Martin class took part in an excellent Road Safety workshop led by the Islington Road Safety Team on Monday 23rd January.

This interactive C.S.I. style project promoted transitional road safety skills in an interactive and unforgettable way, including:

    • How to be a safe, independent traveller on the home to school journey.
    • How distractions like phones and friends put us at risk around roads.
    • What we can do to keep ourselves and our friends safe.

The format of the project, using film footage as well as live interaction, included:

    • An approx. 40 min session delivered by a Riot Act facilitator via a video conferencing platform
    • Incident Report sheets for students to make notes and collect evidence.
    • A school’s pack for follow-up work in the classroom.
  • "Lenny Henry- The Boy With Wings".

    Fri 13 Jan 2023

We are delighted to receive a 100 copies of 'The Boy With Wings' by the very funny Lenny Henry. These were courtesy of the Literacy Trust and Enterprise. This is a national project to develop reading for pleasure among primary and secondary age- pupils, and to allow pupils to own more books at home. We are very fortunate to be able to provide each pupil in Key stage 2 with a book to take home. We hope the children enjoy their book and will share their views with each other in class.
